Broom Finish Driveways & Walks

The standard exterior finish — driveways, sidewalks, patios and aprons

Free EstimateKnoxville & East Tennessee · Mon – Fri

A broom finish is the workhorse of residential concrete and most of what we pour: driveways, garage aprons, sidewalks, patios, porch slabs and generator pads across Knoxville, Maryville, Alcoa, Oak Ridge and Lenoir City. The surface is floated smooth, edged and jointed, then drawn with a broom to leave a fine, even texture that gives grip in the rain and ice without being rough underfoot. Done well it is quietly precise work — the broom lines run straight and all in one direction, the edges and the joints get a smooth trowelled band either side of them, and the slab drains away from the house instead of toward it. Done badly it is obvious for the next thirty years. We pour driveways at the thickness the use actually calls for, put the joints in on a spacing that decides where the slab will crack rather than leaving it to chance, and finish the tie-in to your street or garage so there is no lip to catch a trailer or a wheelchair.

Our Process

1

Grade and Form

Existing surface removed where it needs to be, sub-grade cut and compacted, stone base laid, and forms set to a fall that carries water away from the house.

2

Pour and Float

Concrete placed and screeded to the forms, then bull-floated to bring up the paste the broom will key into.

3

Edge, Joint, Broom

Edges tooled, control joints cut or tooled on a spacing that suits the slab, then the whole surface drawn in one direction so the texture is uniform.

4

Cure and Hand Back

The slab is cured, the forms come out, and we tell you exactly how long to stay off it on foot and in a vehicle — they are not the same number.
